{TRAVEL} | Be Comfy and Stress-Free at the Airport

Hi lovelies! As you know I recently travelled to the UK for a vacation. Travel is extremely rewarding but it can also be quite a stressful undertaking. Today I’m teaming up with Lipault to share some of the tips and tricks I picked up that made my experience in the airports a little more comfortable.

My trip involved 2 flights each on departure and return and a stop-over in Dubai. The stop-overs were short at 2 hours and 5 hours each and with each flight being 7-8 hours it can end up being taxing and tiring if you don’t plan well. Here is what made my life a little easier.

Invest In Good Luggage
Good-quality, durable luggage might be a bit of an investment but it will last you a lifetime. When choosing luggage, make sure that it is lightweight, made from sturdy material and has a decent set of zips and finishes. I personally use Samsonite luggage because the bags are of stellar quality and are really lightweight and spacious. I’d also advise you to get a colour other than black or to add some colourful ribbons or a slip cover on your luggage so that you can identify it easily.
Make sure your carry-on bag fits the requirement for the airline you are flying. The Lipault Plume Spinner is created to fit the dimension requirements for most airlines. It is also made from water-resistant, durable nylon fabric and is finished off with robust but extremely lightweight hardware. It weighs ±7.7 pounds without anything inside and the spinner wheels make moving around really easy. The bag comes in loads of delightful colours too, from black and brown to sultry red and calming blue to pretty pink like mine.

Pack Smart
When preparing your carry-on I suggest packing 2 sets of extra clothes and 3 sets of extra underwear. Nobody wants to think about their luggage getting lost and even though it only happens a small percentage of the time, you don’t want to be stuck without clothes. I pack in items like leggings, t-shirts and clothing that I can fold and fit into a big Ziplock bag. That way I can pack one outfit + underwear together. The Ziplock bags compact the clothing and allow you to pack the clothes in neatly, allowing enough room for some duty free shopping. ;)

Also buy items like extra hair-ties, bobby pins, gum, wet wipes and band aids and pack them in your carry-on. Small things like these can get very expensive and eat into your budget.

Pack your carry-on liquids (below 100mL) and your medication in a clear Ziplock bag and remember to include your liquid/gel liner, mascara and lip glosses because some airports will make you remove them from your makeup bag. Have this Ziplock bag and your electronics (Laptop/iPad/Hair iron etc.) in an easily accessible compartment or in your handbag so that you’re not fumbling around at Security. Take an extra little Ziplock bag and remove your glasses, belt, jewellery etc. and put them in there and in your handbag before queuing up for Security. This keeps them together so you can put them on again after clearing Security.

Familiarise Yourself with the Airport
Check out the website beforehand and locate your terminal and check-in counter if possible. Get acquainted with the restaurants and stores that you can find in the airport especially if you only have a few hours (in transit) and want to do some shopping. Apps like Zomato (available in some countries) list all the restaurants available in and around airports and in the different terminals.

Get There Early
Even if you have checked in online, try to get to the airport right when the check-in for your flight opens. Queues can get pretty long and Security and Passport Control, depending on the business of the airport and time of the day/year, can also take up lots of time. You don’t want to rush through your duty-free shopping do you?

Budget
Apart from duty-free, budget an amount for snacks, food, magazines etc. and stick to it. Even if it means withdrawing that amount in cash. Everything looks so tempting when you are travelling especially if its restaurants and snacks that aren’t available in your country and food can end up getting really expensive. Zomato allows you to look at menus beforehand so you can get an idea of prices at various restaurants to help you budget.

Be Comfortable
This means what is comfortable for YOU. Don’t let anyone or a website tell you what to wear because only you know what works for you. I’ve seen girls breeze through airports in heels! Personally I prefer a pair of sneakers and a pair of slip-ons from Flossy packed into my Lipault carry-on. For clothing I like leggings or joggers.

Make sure your carry-on and handbag are easy to carry and move around. I love my Lipault Lady Plume Tote Bag because it’s lightweight, durable and easy to carry. The nylon fabric means that if I spill that cup of coffee I can wipe it up without any permanent damage.

Layer up! Temperatures can change all the time. The airplane can get really warm or really cold and airports are usually air conditioned.  Instead of one heavy, gigantic coat wear a few lightweight items. I usually wear a tank, a long-sleeved tee, a light bomber jacket and a pashmina. Don’t forget to leave some space in your carry-on for your layers!

Be Calm and Polite
Flights get delayed or you might have to get searched at Security; things like this happen and there’s no use getting worked up. Everyone in the airport is literally just doing their job and trying to make the experience as efficient and comfortable as possible for everyone.

Don’t forget your Pleases and Thank Yous! Being polite costs nothing and means everything! Smiles are free too and can make someone’s day.

Pre Birthday Spoils with Pandora

This week was pretty exciting! On Wednesday I was invited for a little pre-birthday spoil with Pandora.

I visited the new Pandora store in the Mall of Africa which also happens to be the biggest one in the country. The interior of the store is warm, welcoming and luxurious with lots of lovely, soft pink touches. I’m so in love with the gorgeous pink glass light fittings. I wish I had taken a photo to share with you but I only had shopping and jewels on my mind ;)

Pandora started as a small family run jewellery store in Copenhagen before establishing itself as an international luxury brand. The Enevoldsen couple Per and Winnie opened their store in 1982 and sold imported jewellery from Thailand. Today it is the third largest jewellery company in the world in terms of sales (behind just Cartier and Tiffany and Co.!) and boasts a presence in 80 countries including South Africa.

Despite the brand’s dramatic growth, the original values and aesthetic remain the same. Pandora’s production site still exists in Thailand and they source the finest metals and stones to craft their jewellery. 14k gold and sterling silver are married with Murano glass and enamel, gemstones, stones and cultured pearls to create the beautiful pieces we know and adore.

The charm I picked for my bracelet is a cute little Panda. I chose it because it was just too adorable to resist. I absolutely love Pandas and now I have one that can go everywhere with me. I’d like to name him but I haven’t thought of anything yet. Let me know if you have any suggestions!

I’d also like to share a small tip with you on cleaning and caring for your Pandora bracelet. If you find your bracelet is a bit dull or it has picked up some dirt soak it for 5-10 minutes in some lukewarm water with a few drops of dishwashing liquid. Use a soft toothbrush to gently scrub it if necessary and then dry the bracelet with a soft cloth. Use a polishing cloth (available at Pandora stores) to polish it afterwards. No jewellery cleaner or harsh chemicals necessary!

In just over 2 weeks we will be celebrating Pandora’s new AW16 collection. I can’t say much but I do know that if you love jewellery you are going to fall head over heels!

Until next time

{OOTD} | MUSE//MEWs

Hooded Top – Shop Brett Robson | Jeans – H&M | Boots – Timeless Shoes (Gift) | Sunglasses – Primark

The hysteria of Pokémon Go was at its peak when I was in the UK and I spent a great amount of time hunting and catching with my brothers. It was loads of fun, of course, and we also managed to see and identify loads more monuments and landmarks than we would have without the game. The downside was that we didn’t have power banks or portable chargers so our adventures were short lived.

Honestly when Pokémon Go was announced all that time ago I really didn’t think it would take on this well. I’ve always loved Pokémon, it is a warm and safe place for me and it’s something I can share with my brothers despite the mega age gap.

If you’re a regular reader you’ve probably seen my previous Pokémon themed posts. If not you can have a look here and here.

This is a very casual outfit and for running around (and catching Pokémon) I’d probably switch out the boots with sneakers. The hooded top is another winner designed by friend Brett. There’s tons of gorgeous stuff in her store right now so best you have a look. ;)

The lipstick is Urban Decay Vice in Violate. I am OBSESSED with these lipsticks. More on that soon though!

Now, best I’d get going. Jigglypuff is trying to alert me of the Mew (MEWS/MUSE haha!) that’s lurking about.

{NEW IN} | Benefit Brows

Ever since Benefit Cosmetics flew a bunch of beauty bloggers and editors to Las Vegas to announce their new brow collection I couldn’t wait to get my hands on it. In a sweet slumber party-esque soiree that I was lucky enough to attend, the highly anticipated products were launched to the South African market and today I’m going to unbox my gift and give you some of my first impressions.

The new Benefit Brow Collection contains a monstrous 45 products. These are either brand new ones or repackaged/reformulated classic favourites. What’s novel and innovative this time is that the products come in 6 different colours. The packaging is 100% new and 100% gorgeous. Think delicate and cute silver bottles and pens with soft pink branding and accents. Benefit is known for its delightful packaging and this collection does not disappoint. It looks very sweet and royal which perfectly matches my mood (and life… I wish!).

So let’s get straight into what I received.

BROWVO! Conditioning Primer
ZAR395

Benefit describes this as a “nutrient-rich primer for fuller looking brows.”  The BROWVO!

Conditioning Primer contains keratin and soy protein to nourish the brows.  It is a clear, gel based product that doesn’t feel sticky and doesn’t dry heavy.

The product is housed in a click-pen with a ‘custom soft-touch applicator” that deposits the product evenly on the brow hair and skin underneath.

I definitely felt that the products I used after this primer went on much easier.

Gimme Brow
ZAR335

This is a repackage. It is described as a “brow volumizing fibre gel.” It is a tinted gel formula that is buildable.

Gimme Brow comes with a tiny, tapered spoolie applicator that makes application more precise.

KA BROW!
ZAR335

This one is my favourite from the collection. KA BROW! is a “cream-gel brow colour.” It is a buildable, tinted pomade. It also claims to be waterproof with a 24 hour wear.

This product is housed in a delightful little clear bottle with a brush sneakily hidden in the lid.

I love how natural this product looks and feels once applied. It is easy to apply and you can build up the colour from something soft to something a bit more dramatic.

Goof Proof Brow Pencil
ZAR335

This “super easy brow-filling and shaping pencil” is also on my favourites list. It is tinted, angled pencil with a glide on formula. The texture and colour pay-off is very soft so you can definitely build it up without looking or feeling too heavy. It claims to be waterproof with 12 hour wear.

It comes in non-sharpening, twist-up pencil form and also has a handy spoolie on the other end.
The Goof Proof Brow Pencil is perfect if you’re on the go. It is literally fool proof! The soft colour pay-off and shape of the pencil both ensure that there’s no room for mistakes.

As you can tell, I really love Benefit’s new Brow Collection. I’m also keen to get my hands on the rest of the products, especially the High Brow Glow and stunning repackaged Brow Zings.

The Brow Collection is currently available online at redsqaure.co.za until the 15th of July. There are also some nifty kits that contain a few of the products. The products will officially hit Edgars and Red Square stores on the 15th of August, for a list of stockists click here.

Are you excited Benebabes?! What are you most keen to get your hands on?

Until next time

{OOTD} | Harajuku Lite

Crop Top – Mr Price | Skirt – Mr Price | Shoes – Clearance Sale (Very Old) | Rings – Swarovski, Claire’s, Sass Diva | Hair Clip – Fashion Market | Sunglasses – Mr Price

Hello from chilly Johannesburg! Tokyo is one of the cities on my travel bucket list. I have been intrigued by the city and its culture from a very young age and I am especially interested in the Harajuku district. This is the area around the Harajuku station in the Shibuya ward of Tokyo. Harajuku is often deemed the “fashion capital of the world” as it is known for its unique street fashion.

Harajuku is also a term for the distinctive way in which girls in the area dress. The girls wear everything from candy coloured wigs, huge baby doll skirts and pop culture inspired pieces to gothic makeup, pigtails and kimonos. Metallics, neons and plaids also feature quite prominently.  It is such a rich and expressive form of style that really celebrates the individual so naturally it really speaks to me.

Today I am sharing my very diluted take on Harajuku style. I chose to wear this top that is currently in stores at Mr Price with a cute skirt and printed heels.  I added this cute handmade clip that I found at a market a few years back. I can’t even remember the name of the store but how I wish I did because the pieces were so cute! You can find a close- up of the clip on my Instagram. Some cute matching rings and red lipstick finished off the look. It isn’t full on Harajuku of course but it is my take.

I hope you’re all having a wonderful week! There’s just one day left to win tickets to One Direction in Johannesburg. Find the giveaway here.

{OOTD} | The Land of Ooo

T-shirt – ZARA | Leggings – Personal Import | Kaftan – Supré @ Cotton On | Shoes – Topshop | Choker – Made by my Brother | Bracelets – Old | Spiral Ring and Flower Ring – Swarovski

A while back someone I considered a friend at the time said to me that I “try too hard to be different.” This threw me because I don’t try to be something particular. I try to be true to myself and if that makes me “different” then that’s who I am. I thought that once you leave school or the small town people are more accepting of you but the truth is that there will always be people who are threatened by individuality.

One of my favourite TV shows is Adventure Time. It’s silly and ridiculous but it can be deep too and most importantly, it celebrates individuality. That’s why I wore my much-loved Adventure Time leggings with this particular t-shirt in this look. It says “Sorry, I’m different” but I am by no means apologizing for who I am. I am sorry for anyone who can’t accept it. The leggings are quite bright and busy so simple black pieces go best. You don’t want to take attention away from the print or look like a circus clown. I threw this really versatile kaftan over and finished the look with my ridiculously impractical but oh so fab Topshop platforms and some bright jewellery.

I hope you are having a wonderful year so far. If you’re feeling stuck or lost remember what BMO said, “When bad things happen, I know you want to believe they are a joke, but sometimes life is scary and dark. That is why we must find the light.”

Until next time

{OOTD} | PokéYo

Dress – MrP | Boots – ZARA | Bag – Stylemology | Spiral Ring – Swarovski | Hat – Topshop | Bracelet – Sanrio | Necklace – MSC Boutique

It’s 2015! Even though I’m not back in Johannesburg just yet I am totally amped to start blogging again!

Pikachu loves to play but don't touch his cheeks unless you'd like a nasty shock!

At the end of last year I did a fun Star Wars post which got such a great response so I decided to start the year off with something similar. You guys might recognize the outfit from my Style Diary for the SA Fashion Handbook. I thought it could do with the addition of some of my cute friends because I did not much else except relax and play lots of Pokémon over the holidays.

Sylveon is my best friend. She loves to eat pink PokePuffs but beware of her Dazzling Gleam!

My Inkay is a little shy but his Psywave is mean!

I personally think that fashion is a tool we can use to express who we are rather than an embellishment to make us look ‘pretty’ or ‘stylish’ I think it’s really important that elements of one’s personality shine through in what they wear. I do not see the sense in wearing exactly what the mannequin in a store is wearing. It was after all, the late great Gianni Versace who said, “Don’t be into trends. Don’t make fashion own you, but you decide what you are, what you want to express by the way you dress and the way you live.”

Here’s to a fabulous, fashion filled 2015!

Until next time!
